Client: John P. Picone, Inc.
Project Description: The Number 7 Line Extension Project consists of a 7,000 foot tunnel extension and construction of 2 stations. Site P consists of construction of the 35th Street Entrance into the 34th Street and Eleventh Avenue Station.
Our Role: William J. Frank Engineering was brought on by John P. Picone, Inc. to design the soldier pile timber lagging wall with tiebacks. The wall retained soil from the elevation of the existing grade to the top of bedrock elevation reaching heights as high as 35 feet. The North side of the wall supported pedestrian and vehicular traffic from 35th Street. The bedrock along the front face of the wall was then blasted out in order to construct the proposed station entrance. The total length of all support of excavation walls was approximately 400 feet, with portions of the excavation completed by open cutting and sloping. The wall consisted of H-pile soldier piles toe-pinned into bedrock and multiple levels of soil anchor tiebacks installed at various heights dependent of the bedrock elevation.

Project Description: The Reconstruction of the Kew Gardens Interchange consists of major upgrades to various highways at the confluence of the Grand Central Parkway, The Van Wyck Expressway, the Jackie Robinson Parkway, and the Union Turnpike. The work includes widening of the Van Wyck Expressway under Queens Blvd. and therefore reconstruction and lengthening of the Queens Blvd. Bridge over the Van Wyck Expressway.
Our Role: William J. Frank Engineering was retained by Moretrench to design the soil nail wall support of excavation system to be installed behind the proposed east abutment of the new Queens Blvd. Bridge. The soil nail wall allowed the general contractor to excavate for proposed subgrade of the new abutment while holding up traffic on Queens Blvd. and was a cheaper option than the soldier pile and timber lagging wall shown on the contract plans.
The soil nail wall was 500 feet long and up to 30 feet high. Nail lengths varied from 17 feet to 28 feet long.

Project Description: This project consisted of major renovations and expansions of the Ocean Medical Center in Brick, New Jersey. The project included an approximately 50,000 square foot building addition, with parking underneath, and a ramp that provides access to the underground parking.
Our Role: William J. Frank Engineering was retained by Moretrench to design the soldier pile lagging wall with tiebacks that allowed for construction of the proposed building footings, underground parking facilities, and access ramp. The total length of all support of excavation walls was approximately 850 feet, with portions of the excavation completed by open cutting and sloping. Wall heights were as high as 30 feet. The wall consisted of H-pile soldier piles embedded below subgrade of the wall and one level of soil anchor tiebacks installed six feet below the top of the wall.
